ELT 406 Registration
It is crucial that 406 MHz distress beacons be registered in the Canadian beacon registration database which will be accessible to Search and Rescue authorities at all times. The information contained in this database concerning the beacon, its owner, and the aircraft on which the beacon is mounted is vital for the effective use of Search and Rescue resources. The proper registration of a beacon could make the difference between success and failure of a search and rescue mission.
You will need the following information to register a beacon:
- Beacon Hexadecimal Identification (located on the ELT)
- Owner's name, address and phone number(s)
- Emergency contact name and phone number(s)
- Aircraft information
Each 406 MHz ELT contains a unique identification code that is transmitted to the satellite. The unique identification code relates to the Search and Rescue database. The code shall be programmed using the serialized aircraft 24-bit address format which uniquely identifies the airframe in addition to the ELT.
If the ELT is moved to a different aircraft or if an aircraft is purchased outside of Canada and has a 406 beacon installed, it will need to be reprogrammed.
A new or used 406 MHz beacon MUST be registered by law.
If you have an address change or an aircraft is sold /purchased and has a previously registered 406 MHz beacon, the information in the database must be updated. The owner/operator of the aircraft is responsible for modifying the information.
Beacon owners can register or update their registration information online or by faxing in a form.
